RISKS
Due to the nature of human rights work, all defenders are prone to risks and threats. However, there are some specific, gendered factors which may exaggerate the risk to some women defenders. These risks are used by adversaries to try and silence, punish, or shut-down defenders. Some women defenders face hostile environments which impacts their digital, physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, such as societal pressures to care for others before themselves. Therefore, it is important to engage in a conversation regarding the risks to defenders. Women defenders are especially prone to attacks on their sexuality and honour, or face allegations of psychological disorders and witchcraft. There are many other risks women defenders face, the pages below attempt to capture some of them in more detail.
